Testing is a process of multiple activities.Generally for each activities and each phases of testing life cycle we make some document.
    We make document:
To guide our thinking(because it is possible that if something is said we do not understand but when it is written we understand.)
It acts as vehicle of communication with rest of project member.
It acts as a record of previous discussion.
    It helps in managing changes
The essential documentation that we use during testing depends on above mentioned factor. It also varies from organization to organization and project to project.
    Some examples can be:
    Software Requirement Specification
    Test Case documentation
    Test plan sheet
    Test Summary Report etc.

    Hi Praveen Chandra,

Documentation bears an important role in software testing. In every phase of software testing tester prefers to prepare a document for many reasons like :-
    1) Documentation gives an excellent way of describing the current project status.
    2) It helps to track the progress and implement the future strategies.
    3) Documentation can be used by inexperienced person to gain some knowledge in less time.

There are many essential documents that testers use during testing. They are :-
    1) Test plan specification.
    2) Test design specification.
    3) Test procedure specification.
    4) Test case specification.
    5) Test strategy document etc.

    Thanks and regards
    Sitam
