I'm by no means a guru so I'm just giving you my opinion and the limited knowledge I have:
The main differences between the two are in the networking and domain setups. I think Home edition mainly uses workgroups and basic sharing while Professional gives you a much more secure and useable network environment including domain servers and proper user accounts.
For home use, Microsoft Home edition is funnily enough, pretty reasonable. But for a home office or business use, I would spend the extra money and get Professional, it runs better, has more functionality and security and generally has less issues with configuration and connectivity.
