Potential problems handling databases?
Hi All
I am working for a small company where we deal with customers direct marketing of the products. So i need to carry out mass updates,e.g. like no of products and the adresses...
Right now we have person from outside the company who deals with databases.I have a good knowledge of relational databases and have used MS Access to an advanced level in my previous company like extracting data from Oracle database and working on live tables. So i have suggested to my boss to let me handle the databases as I am pretty confident about this work but he is reluctant to let me for the danger of damaging the data.I am quite confident about database in and out.Does anyone suggest me what I am trying is right or wrong, and any suggestions to safeguard against potential problems. And also the tables which i will be working are being backed up regularly.Any suggestions are appreciated...
Thanks

Since your boss is not willing to trust your ability. It is best to leave that job to the person from outside who deals with databases. I am not saying that what you are trying is wrong. It is just that you must try a different approach at an appropriate time. Just put yourself in the shoes of your boss and analyse the situation.
You may say you know, but by your actions you are known....

Gain your boss's trust, Sasha. Later, for all you know you may be the one handling the databases all by yourself

Dont push too hard. Things dont work right that way.
One thing I could suggest is hang around when your current database admin and boss meet, any conversation could boost your "boss's eyes" rating - it worked great for me.
Whats it called... Oh yes, BROWN NOSING.

Perhaps you could setup a test environment on another computer/server and manage that "test" database. Show you know what you are doing, and also improve your skills and learning. You could even do this outside of your job if you want to learn everything before you show off your skills.
