How is rank transformation done? Where is it used?

hi ,
rank transformation is one of the transformation that give ranks to the rows
for example if u take sal to give rank for sal who got highest sal .for this for every row of sal has rank with highest to lower sal the highest may be firstrank and rest of them decreasing the rank. ok
