Is Idea Needed

I have started to work with UNIX operating system. What is awk in UNIX. Is it that one must have idea on awk to work with UNIX system.

awk is a option in UNIX operating system. Though I do not complete idea about awk I am sure for working in UNIX operating system it is not mandatory to have idea about awk.
