Diffrence between ASP and ASP.NET

Is there any diffrence in ASP and ASP.NET? i heared more than three languages with same name like ASP,ASP.NET,VB.net,.Net.What are thease all?create little bit of confusion for me.Please tell me about this?

it's changed a lot between asp and asp.net .... it's not an easy question to answer but here are the differences ...

ASP .NET has better language support, a large set of new controls and XML based components, and better user authentication.
ASP .NET provides increased performance by running compiled code.
ASP .NET code is not fully backward compatible with ASP.
