if you have prior knowledge of C++ then you can go for java books by Balagurushamy. I started learning java from this book then i go for HEAD
FIRST JAVA-KATHHY SIERRA....this is my way of learning java.
Head first book is really good.

    Hi

a beginner. . i would advise you to take up java complete reference.
then thinking in java by bruce would help . active forum participation helps to learn a lot rather than attending classes who teach 10% from the book. Browse to find a lot of ebooks in individual topics
