No need to use excel sheets when u have Test Director.
but in real time it will be depend upon the Company Rules and Tester.
for ex: if the tester is fresher - in some companies suggest to the tester to write test cases in excel sheets for sr tester check

the probablity of using Excel sheets if u have test director is very less. but some companies use other defect reporting tools, even if they have test director.
and also in some places, they would like to write testcases in excel sheet first, review them in excel and lateron u can export them to TD

I don't have any experience with using test director, there are several test management tools available to defect reporting; but I would like to suggest you to try Zephyr, a comprehensive Test Management System with a sharp Defect Tracking feature. It's graphical and very effective in finding, reporting, retesting, verifying and closing defects.

Hi
Right simmi... as madhoo said.. first we will create test casses in excel sheet. and then will export it into Test director.
here in my company we are using Test director.. that is client's TD. will create casses in excel and will export it into TD. then will update the test results in TD. Actually this will be easy to track Defects if any test case is failed automatically Defect will be generated in TD.

It depends from company to company and project to project.
Many companies now a days are using separate tools for defect reporting and test case management.
