difference between EDI and interface

Hi

Can anyone tell me why shud we use EDI when there is interfaces in oracle apps
What are the advantages and if any documents pls send

these days when technology is far advanced we prefer using EDI electronic data interchange between two companies for transfer of data b.SAY there needs to be a transfer a lot of data between two companies X and Y instead of sending the data in flat file then loading in staging tables then validating and transferring into interface tables and finally into base tables we can use EDI.EDI has workbench which converts the oracle apps data into a known format then edi translator converts it into EDIFACT or X12 format .This data is transfered into 2nd company through internet which performs inbound EDI to get the data transferred.

The major advantage of using Oracle e-Commerce Gateway are listed below:

1. Reduction in labor hours dedicated to data entry
2. Increased data accuracy
3. Quicker communication of key information to and from customers/suppliers resulting in reduced business cycle times and more efficient planning
4. Promotes commonality of business documents and processes.
