H1B Validity/GC

I stayed in US for 5Yrs and few days (1-2 weeks). Now, I am back in India, stayed for 10months. My question is, when should I apply for new H1B so that I will get H1B of validity 6yrs again. Current H1B is valid for less than 1year, which means I have to be back before 1 year If I go to USA now.

My plan is to get new H1B of validity 6 years and then apply for GC so that I have time to get GC before my new H1B expires. I hope you got my question right?
