Appserver and webserver testing

Can anyone explain how it would be different for testing on an Application server and a web server.

I think application server is windows based application and web server is web based application.
application server means Lan Based Application

Hi

Aplliacation Server and Web Server are both are different Servers

for Example we will take Googlemail (Gmail)
whenever u browse the gmail it will ask for the credentials like ur used id and password
these validations takes place in apllication server
when comes to webserver there all the data like ur inabox mails and all stored there
