Interesting Suggestion to Remove Blank Space

I am doing a shell script and in the middle of this shell script handling I am planning to make the shell script read an input text file. I want to remove more than one blank spaces placed between each word in the input file. I want my shell script to handle this. I am struck with the process. Some interesting suggestions would help me to proceed.
