I will tell you about my limited experience.I am a Canadian citizen and resident. Canada is a HORRIBLE place to work as a programmer. The pay is extremely low in comparison to the United States, particularly if you have an advanced degree (Ph.D. in my case).I took a job in the U.S. that paid roughly 5 times the salary that I could expect in Canada. So my limited experience tells me that the US is WAAAAAY better than Canada. I could not possibly accurately tell you how it fares relative to the rest of the world, but I would suspect that it would fare well.Agreed with the above, COBOL limits yourself far too much. It is a small and shrinking field - it was great coming up to Y2K, but has been downhill since then. You are far better to learn highly language-independent skills, such as taking courses on algorithms (searching, sorting, determining complexity and such), digital signal processing (DSP), signal processing and mathematics.

I agree that the wages for programmers are very good in the U.S. But there is a also a lot of competition now days as this is one of the most popular fields of study right now and has been for a few years.
I also agree about Cobol most companies have moved away from using this and code that were once written with COBOL is now being replaced. |
