Mainframe COBOL is still VERY widely used in large business environments.Due to the huge existing COBOL code base in legacy applications, COBOL will have a significant presence in mainframe shops for at least the next decade or two.I suppose another way to ask this question would be "will more new coding be done in J2EE or in COBOL?". I work for a large North American bank and at my company the majority of new code development is still in COBOL.Hope this helps.

Researches indicate that COBOL would surely continue to be used over the minimum of next 10 years at the existing level. The main reason for this is 87 percent of the businesses responding are currently developing and maintaining code written in the COBOL language. So future scope in Mainframes(Cobol) is surely bright.

Yes as suggested by cyrus I also admit that requirement to maintain existing COBOL applications necessitates continued demand for new replacement COBOL programmers. One more statistical researched data to prove our point is there are about two million COBOL programmers in the world which is more than twice the number of JAVA programmers.

COBOL already with it vast usage has gained much popularity and in future would surely play a vital role in the e-commerce revolution by providing the support systems that are required by all businesses making it powerful among web users also.
