Re:time period

There are limited restrictions! Your passport should be valid for the next 6 months or 3 months or 30 days (I am not sure - laws could have changed). At the same time, its common sense too.. If you have a F1 Student visa effective for the Fall 2004 and you land at an airport today, the immigration officer is going to ask you why are you joining so late. If you don\'t have proof (medical reason? get a letter from a doctor and stamped at the local USCIS office in your city), and if I was the immigration officer, I will send you back saying, either give me an explanation as to why you are landing here so late in the semester or go back to your country and file again with a new I-20 for joining in the next semester!

But if you hold a B1/B2 Business visa, then you can land anytime before the visa expires of 6 months before your passport expires (Not sure about the term of the validity of your passport, but its either 6 months/3 months or 30 days!)

The logical reasoning goes with your H1B too. If you have an offer letter stating that you should join in June 2004 and you land now, the officer is going to wonder what happened and will most likely send you back home! (Atleast I will!)

Good luck!
