Getting started to Linux

Hi, I am a windows xp user, but I was always tempted to get started to linux. I am mainly interested in basic applications: a word processor, internet browsing and an email client. Do you think Linux it's a good choice for me? Which distribution would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

Hi Falco, I would not suggest you to move to linux, since you are looking for compatibility and basic applications. If you don't have a particular reason to switch to linux, I think that it's useless to you.

Hello alexei, I don't like win XP and this is the reason because I'd like to move. Am I wrong if I say that with Linux I will have a friendly user enviroment?

Linux is hard matter for newbies. If you are used to windows, stick to it just my 2 cents

That's a good question indeed! Learning Linux will require you lots of time and dedication. First of all, buy a good book such as Peter Norton's one. Then, you will find all you need to know in the man files you will find with your distro. Moreover, visit the Linux Documentation Project website for more papers you can use for your installation issues. Good luck!

Linux community is not willing to help newbies so easily. The most probable answer you would receive is: RTFM (read the fucking manual) better learn than yourself!!

its hard explaining linux on the IRC and the tendency is being piss*d off by the tutor better to read it yourself.. start from the basic.. linux is not a user friendly not like the windows even a 5year old can use it with linux it is more complicated.. althought the advantage of this is that windows is for sale while linux is free..
