I think you are asking about the differences between physical database design and logical database design. A logical database design is done prior to physical database design. That is using the logo9cal database design only initial implementation of physical database design is made.

In a logical database design requirements are gathered and different types of diagrams like entity relationship diagram, process flow diagram and so on are produced from the requirements gathered. The actual implementation using the logical database designed is made in the physical database design. This tells us that physical database is the actual database and logical database is the conceptual model of physical database.
