Call for Contribution and Participation in the MODELS'05 workshop 9
"MDD for Software Product-lines: Fact or Fiction?"
Will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2005

Scope: key advantages of using model-driven development in conjunction
with commonality/variability analysis (CVA) are (1) rigorously
capturing the key roles and responsibilities in a CVA and (2) helping
automate repetitive tasks that must be accomplished for each product
instance. Often, however, new customer requirements invalidate the
results of earlier CVAs, such that a CVA and its derived meta-models,
Domain-specific Modeling Languages (DSML), and model
transformations/generators must be modified invasively and intrusively
to reflect these new requirements. The primary scope of this workshop
will be on theory and methods to reduce the impact of the new
unanticipated requirements on the meta-models and model interpreters
in order to improve the usability of model-based technologies in
real-life large scale applications.

For more information about the workshop please visit the workshop home
page at
http://www.geocities.com/andreynech/...sWorkshop.html

GOALS

the workshop objectives are to

1. Explore the pros and cons of current model-based technologies with
respect to software product-line development, validation, and
evolution.

2. Exchange the state of the current research on solution approaches
regarding the problem of stabilizing meta-models,
model-transformations, and code generators with minimal impact.

3. Analyze the impact of promising relevant software development
methodologies and techniques for software product lines (for
example Software Factories, domain modeling methodologies, etc.) on
industrial software development.

SUBMISSIONS

the workshop submissions should contribute to work on software
product-lines by providing

* Techniques and tools that help overcome the challenges described
above, i.e., the means to stabilize meta-model and generators with
respect to updated commonalities and variabilities. Examples
include, but are not limited to:

o Patterns and pattern languages that can be applied to capture
complex commonalities and variabilities via MDD tools.

o Aspect-oriented software development techniques in the context of
metamodelling and model transformations/code generators.

o Techniques for enhancing meta-modeling, model transformations, and
code generators to handle updates to CVA more seamlessly.

* Case-studies that elucidate and amplify key challenges associated
with developing, validating, and applying software product-line in
practice. We also welcome case-studies that analyze relevant
experience from other domains than software engineering,
e.g. hardware development, building industry, etc.

Please send your submissions to andreynech@yahoo.com (PDF format is
preferred).

IMPORTANT DATES

Deadline for Position Papers: August 15, 2005
Notification Date of Acceptance: September 7, 2005
Final paper: September 19, 2005
Workshop Date: October 2, 2005

PUBLICATIONS

There is a negotiation process with Springer regarding a possible
publication of workshop papers in LNCS. A published conference
satellite report is currently being investigated. It would contain a
summary of the conference workshop (up to 8 pages), and the two best
papers. This publication would be available at cost, and available on
the registration form.
