I recently came across a term called as digital certificates. What does this actually mean? Is it used in banking sectors? Someone kindly let me know about this and the usage of the digital certificates

Digital Certificates At the basic overview digital certificates are used for security transmissions and takes the concept of encryption and decryption of text messages and is also used in banking sectors for checking the cheque signatures, MICR code. But even I want to know the internal working of digital certificates. If someone could post on that it would help us all to know about digital certificates.
