ODP.NET Developer’s Guide
Oracle Database 10g Development with Visual Studio 2005 and the Oracle Data Provider for .NET
ODP.NET Developer’s Guide: Oracle Database 10g Development with Visual Studio 2005 and the Oracle Data Provider for .NET is a book written by Jagadish Chatarji Pulakhandam and Sunitha Paruchuri although their name is relatively unknown, they have been working in the IT field for more than a decade. Their specific experience in Oracle has also been extensive and this book has shown their expertise on the field. Although unrelated, their management experience in web development has also led them to observe the general practice of web development from a distance and write generalizations about application development.
Visual Studio 2005 – Released October of 2005, Visual Studio 2005 has used the .NET framework for additional functions. With Visual Studio 2005, developers will have the ability to develop GUI with efficiency using the .NET framework. Added function to the 2005 version is the local web server including a very powerful x86-64 compiler. The Visual Studio 2005 also includes an SDK which is a very effective application so that developers could integrate Visual Studio 2005 with different frameworks.
ODP.NET Developer’s Guide Review
The book is divided into nine chapters, each of them discussing a specific topic developed in stages. The book starts out with simple concepts and slowly builds up by providing additional concepts for application development.
Chapter 1 gives the reader an introduction to the popular concepts that will be used in web development. The chapter also discusses how will ODP.NET and other tools related to the development of the application could be actually used and needed in the actual world.
Chapter 2 deals with the different ways of connecting to the Oracle. The chapter shows the different aspects in connecting with the Oracle specifically from ADO.NET 2.0. Since ODP has been optimized, instructions on how to connect with the ODP as efficient as possible should be in place. The .NET providers are also discussed in this chapter in relation with its integration with the ODP. These .NET providers have different approach and connecting to ODP by the .NET providers are discussed in this chapter. The chapter also discussed the different techniques in ODP.NET connection which includes customization and security within the network with access control of the application.
Chapter 3 discusses the different techniques on how to access data from the Oracle. This chapter shows how can a developer connect to ODP and retrieve in different settings. The book shows how the developer could access single data table and multiple data table. Different functions are discussed in this chapter so that developers will understand each function on retrieving data such as DataReader and DataAdapeter. Options on how to present the data retrieved from the Oracle are also discussed in this chapter.
Chapter 4 shows how the developers can manipulate the data stored in the Oracle. The database could be easily edited by any developer however, not all could easily harness this skill for web development especially in Oracle. Popular commands and function related to the database management is discussed in this chapter. Another special feature in this chapter is about offline data. With the advantage of developing online applications with the local server gives the developer to build an application easily. Troubleshooting of the application included errors that are expected from database management is also discussed in this chapter.
Chapter 5 discusses a very powerful extension of Oracle, the PL/SQL or the Procedural Language/Structured Query Language. With this knowledge developers should be to harness the different functions in PL/SQL such as their blocks and procedures. The functions that go with PL/SQL are also discussed in this chapter. A special section dedicated to REF CURSOR is also discussed in this chapter. This chapter is very important for developers since it assures the data’s security by streaming the information from the database securely. Errors and troubleshooting of the function in PL/SQL is also available in this chapter.
Chapter 6 deals with coding the database for larger functions. Smaller functions could start changes in the application and could be easily handled by any developer in case something happens but with the skills needed for handling larger applications should also be emphasized. Large files structures such as BFILE, CLOBs amd BLOBs are discussed with this chapter. Each of these file structure requires different scenarios for greater understanding.
Chapter 7 deals with the special feature that can only be found in ODB.NET – the XML integration. Using XML, developers could easily insert universal data to the server. The chapter discusses how XML can be a special feature in ODB.NET and how convenient it would be to use this mark-up language for application development.
Chapter 8 discusses the actual application environment of the ODB.NET. With its integration to the .NET framework, you’ll see scenarios where an asynchronous environment is built. Web development for ASP.NET that leads to Ajax is discussed in this application. The use of XML in web development is extensively discussed here. A part of the chapter is also dedicated for developers interested in building applications for mobile devices.
Chapter 9 shows how can developers build application using ODB.NET with the use of Visual Studio 2005. This chapter shows how the developer can connect to ODB.NET using Visual Studio 2005. This chapter basically integrates everything that has been discussed about ODB.NET which ultimately uses Visual Studio 2005 to connect to the database. The previous applications such as PL/SQL and data manipulation such as editing are discussed here – only that the ODB.NET is used with Visual Studio 2005. In gist, the development tools in ODB.NET are discussed here but with the use of Visual Studio 2005 as its main tool.
ODP.NET Developer’s Guide: Oracle Database 10g Development with Visual Studio 2005 and the Oracle Data Provider for .NET is a very simple book smartly written for budding developers who wanted to know more about ODT.NET. Every aspect of database management is shown in this book. Each function in ODB.NET is discussed with the actual coding so that developers will have the first hand understanding regarding the specific function.
The developers are also given a glimpse of a quick review of ODP.NET’s integration with Visual Studio 2005. Although it is not extensively discussed, the information provided is the very basics that it could be translated to other scenarios easily.
Because of the outline behind ODP.NET and the philosophy that works with Visual Studio 2005 is efficiently discussed, the ODP.NET Developer’s Guide: Oracle Database 10g Development with Visual Studio 2005 and the Oracle Data Provider for .NET is a good book for any developer to start with. Anyone who wants to start developing an application should check this book as a great reference. Even those who are already experienced but need to brush up on their basics will also re-learn things through this book.
