Books ReviewsOracle Coherence 3.5 Book Review
The internet has ushered massive data flow for businesses in any industry. A single online connection will allow any user access to millions of websites that provide information on a specific data. For businesses, maintaining this massive data is critical for their businesses. They have to handle data in a large-scale scenario or else they will never be able to provide the services expected online.
This is the reason why local-server is no longer the best solution for a growing business. The “cloud” has become the byword for many businesses simply because it provides unlimited expansion to a business also experiencing the same expansion. But the challenge of an ever-expanding data is on maintaining it to be easily accessible online.

This is where Oracle Coherence tries to provide an answer. In gist, it is a data management system from Oracle that eases loading of database without compromising user’s experience on working with the data online. Oracle Coherence can be used with different servers located around the world so that data transmission to different users will be stable. The tool provides a fully scalable solution for businesses and industries that deals with massive data.
About the Book
Oracle Coherence 3.5 tries to explain, in detail, how Oracle Coherence can work in a business environment. The information provided by the author is based on real-world situations which mean the problems and solutions are never theoretical. These scenarios will most likely happen when working with Oracle Coherence and the solutions is also applicable to real-world settings.
But aside from task-based solutions, the book also provides detailed information on how to start with Oracle Coherence. From basic set-up to working with other programming languages, the reader will be provided with step-by-step instructions so that Oracle Coherence will work as expected.
Regarding the Authors
The authors of the book are not just banking on their experience with programming languages in order to write a book. The main author, Aleksandar Seovic, is one of the leading developers of .Net for Oracle Coherence. His expertise is based not just on the IT industry but specifically in Oracle Coherence. The co-authors, Mark Falco and Patrick Peralta are also working with Oracle and have been part of Coherence for many years. Mark Falco has been with Coherence since 2005 and Patrick Peralta has vast experience in real world application of Coherence in various industries worldwide.
Book Chapters in Summary
The book can be divided into three parts. The first portion of the book deals with the basics of Oracle Coherence. The second portion deals with the possibility of extending Oracle Coherence with the use of additional programming languages. The third party is the conclusion.
Chapters 1 – 8: Oracle Coherence by Itself
These chapters provide a short glimpse on how Oracle Coherence can be
applicable in real world situations. The early chapters introduce the reader how
Oracle Coherence can be the solution on massive data management. This includes
setting up Coherence, planning and basic implementation of the system. The later
chapters pertain to data grid management especially querying and events related
to data-grid. The chapter that should be noted in this part of the book is
Chapter 8: “Implementing Persistence Layer” since this is where effective cache
planning and data-grid management comes to fruition.
Chapters 9-11: Expanding the Capabilities of Oracle Coherence
Oracle Coherence, by itself, is a smart solution for businesses for data management. But more can be done when this system is expanded with the help of other platforms. These final chapters of the book provide a detailed look on how to transform the pure Oracle Coherence into a “mash-up” with other languages. Specifically, .NET and C++ can be integrated with Oracle Coherence. But before these two languages are introduced, the reader will have to go through detailed preparation. A chapter is dedicated on how to transform Oracle Coherence so that it can easily work with either .NET or C++. Two separate chapters are then dedicated on integrating .NET and C++, respectively.
Chapter 12: The Right Tool for the Job
The final chapter of the book is basically a synthesis of what was discussed on the book as well as a short essay why Oracle Coherence is a highly recommended system for data management (suggested by the chapter’s title). The chapter tells the challenges of data management and how Oracle Coherence can deal with this problem. Part of the chapter is dedicated to some helpful tips on how to deal with massive data and optimizing the functions of Oracle Coherence.
Conclusion:
Oracle Coherence 3.5 is a highly recommended book for those who want to start using the system from Oracle. The detailed instructions along with codes and screenshots improve understanding especially on the final chapters of the book. Because of these samples and suggested solutions, the book can also be used as a reference guide for advanced users.
