By Chandra Vennapoosa | on November 9, 2012 |
Project Management Life Cycle

The Project Management Life Cycle is comprised of 13 models which include: Waterfall Model, Spiral Model, Evolutionary Prototyping Model, Evolutionary Delivery Model, Throwaway Prototyping Model, Staged Delivery Model, Design to Tools Model, Design to Schedule Model, Code and Fix Model, Incremental/Iterative Development, Reusable Software Model, Automated Software Synthesis and Off-the-Shelf Model.

All of these models are fundamental to the success of every project. In the last 30 years, the life cycle has evolved from simple basic models to more complex and detailed models that have been designed to cater to specific needs of projects.

Importance of the Project Management Life Cycle Models

Life Cycle models provide the structure needed for a project. Without one, it would be difficult to control its direction and implement effective strategies. With each model, any project will be given realistic and tailor-made information based on the project itself, which may change as the project progresses. As such, expectations will be set and unwanted surprises can be avoided. It will also be easier to detect problems and errors during each phase and thus, it will be less difficult to find a way to prevent or resolve them.

Additionally, there will also be limited occasions for failure because each model prevents a project to go through the next phase without successfully passing the previous phase.Although projects may differ for companies, they still utilize the same models. From the 13 that are available, there is at least one that is applicable for any project.

The best Project Management Life Cycle for You

One of the main things to be considered here is, when working on a certain project a manager is required to make decisions based not only on gut feel, but also on facts. The same goes when choosing the right model for a project. Knowing which model will work best for it is essential to its success. Each model has its own advantages and disadvantages; therefore it will be necessary for a manager to put under careful consideration all the factors associated with the project before deciding on which model to use.

As you go through each model, you will have a clearer understanding of what they are all about, particularly the pros and cons that goes along with each of them. You will also know if it will work for your project or not. After going through each model, you should then be able to make a sound decision as to which one is best to use for the project you will undertake.

Project management has certainly improved, after years and years of finding out better ways to manage a project. The Project Management Life Cycle Models will greatly help you and your company in ensuring the success of your project. As we discuss each model in great detail, you will be able to gain access on information of proven systems that will certainly allow you to avoid errors and prevent problems from coming your way. In this regard, you can work towards the completion of your project in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner.
