Assertive Communication

By Exforsys | on January 30, 2009 |
Assertive Skills

Communication is directly connected to being assertive.  People are the essence of business, whether they are managers or employees. Working as a business owner or employee requires you to be an effective communicator, and you must learn how to present yourself in the right manner.

Many people tend to think that success in business requires them to be rational and logical, they must always remember is that the human element is also critically important. This is one reason why it is important to develop soft skills, and one of the best soft skills you can develop is assertiveness.

Communicating Assertively can often mean the difference between successfully closing a deal, or losing it. It can also mean the difference between effectively leading a team, or causing it to fail. Having good people skills will allow you to build strong relationships with others, and it allows you to get more from everyone around you, whether they are external or internal to your organization.

While assertive communication is one of the most important soft skills you can have, it is by no means the only one. Some of the other soft skills that you will want to develop include persuasion, negotiating, public speaking, and the ability to manage a team.

Once you are better at understanding people and the ways in which they behave, you will be much better at presenting your ideas, and you will be able to do so in a manner which reduces the amount of impact you face. While soft skills are important for managers, they are equally important for anyone who wants to become better with people, and who are interested in growing their careers.

There are a lot of professions in which having assertiveness are incredibly important.  Some of the career fields in which assertive communication will get you far includes Information Technology, customer service, politics, sales, and journalism.

In any business where you will be spending a large amount of time dealing with people, assertive communication is incredibly important. There are few places where these skills are not important, and they can help you when it comes to handling meetings, dealing with the staff, or breaking down complex ideas into simple terms that others can understand.

For a few people, communication seem to be natural, but for the rest of us, it is something we have to work at. Many people are frightened by the idea of public speaking or working with strangers, but there are many people who flourish in these types of scenarios.

While passive people find it difficult to perform well in these situations, others are far too aggressive. No matter what category you fall under, it never hurts to develop both assertiveness and other key soft skills.

When you are receiving training for the development of soft skills, it is crucially important to take into consideration the personality of yourself. The best approach that you should use in teaching yourself soft skills is heavily connected to your personality type.

One thing that is certain is that soft skills are something that you cannot afford to be without. Being successful often requires you to work with others, and if you are the type of person who does not like working with others, then you will find it difficult to succeed. It is important to develop people skills as much as you can.

The connection between assertive communication and the other soft skills is that they require you to deal with people without being too aggressive or too passive.

People who are passive are rarely respected, and many people try to walk over them. Aggressive people often cause resentment with others, but those who possess assertiveness and soft skills tend to be a nice balance between the two, and succeed as a result. Developing assertive communication requires you to be balanced more than anything else.
