Social Networking for Small Businesses

By Exforsys | on February 23, 2010 |
Social Networking

Operating a small business is very challenging. A small business is usually consist of few employees and has a very fragile cash flow. If the cash flow or manpower is changes even by a small fraction, the small business will have to make significant operational changes in order to survive. If they are not able to cope up with challenges posed by these changes, small businesses may never survive.

Although manpower is very important, cash flow is even more significant in the sense that it could make everything possible for the small business. A cash flow could only be attained if they gain more customers and if small businesses want to use online connectivity, the best way to do it is through social networking.

Help Through Social Networking

Social networking provides business a chance to connect to more customers without spending too much. Small businesses could use the power of social networking in gaining more customers as their name could be passed from one user to another. But the setting of getting noticed through social networking might not work because of the unique setting of small businesses.

Getting referred from one person to another might be a little bit slow for small businesses. The operation in a small business is very fragile that a week or two without reaching their targeted number of customers may cause the small business to go down.

Instead of the traditional social networking practices, small businesses have to adopt aggressive marketing techniques in order to gain notice through social networks. Compared to traditional marketing, being aggressive in social networks is more cost effective and could have significant effects for the small business. If social networks are properly used, small business owners will be able to gain the advantage of being noticed that will lead to more customers and better business operations.

A Step Further From Simple Social Networking

Creating a profile for small businesses and inviting friends to become part of the social network could be a good way to gain notice. But as already indicated; they could take time which is seen as a disadvantage for small businesses. Small businesses have to be a bit more aggressive and reach out to more customers by other means. Although aggressiveness might cost a little bit, the attention a business could gain is worth it.

There are two methods that you can gain attention from potential clients in social networking. First is through online advertisement on social networking websites. While they might be very easy to set-up, they could be a bit expensive.

The second method of gaining attention is to create groups, activities and even small videos related to your industry or products. This technique may not cost anything at all as it will only require time and patience on how attention could be gained.

If you have the manpower that can work with different social networking websites and its tools, this method is a lot better since you are not just pushing your small business to others but you are increasing your presence in difference social networking websites.

Targeting Your Customers

Of course, the basics of advertising and marketing for small businesses still apply. It’s no use to put too much effort on gaining notice from the persons that will most likely ignore what you offer to them. It is better to gain the attention of the few that could become customers rather than gaining the attention of everyone without gaining any interest to buy or subscribe to the offered service.

Create a target if you want to become aggressive in gaining attention in different social networking websites. You already might have this data since you know who should be your customers. The only challenging part is on how you can gain their attention. This could be addressed by joining or creating relevant groups wherein you can share your knowledge of the industry and your business. Instead of letting them come to you, you go aggressively after your customers. Through social networking websites, you can prove what your business can do.

Social networking is the perfect platform for small businesses to gain more customers. It’s a cost effective technique in getting the attention of more customers. By smartly using the tools and opportunities offered by different social networks, a small business could improve their business which might not require spending a single cent on traditional advertising.
