Effectively Using Online Social Networks

By Exforsys | on February 22, 2010 |
Social Networking

Social networking is a very cost effective practice used by professionals and businesses to boost their popularity as well as reputation. Through social networking, they can connect to additional businesses and personalities they see important which could help them in their current business operations.

For professionals, social networking enables them to keep up with the latest in the industry, getting constant update from contacts and families and creating new friends along the way. When social networking is properly utilized by professionals and businesses, they could prove to be a source of additional resources that could be very vital.

But social networking for professionals and businesses is not just a simple exchange of information. It’s a common misconception that an account in many social networking websites will automatically attract people and other businesses. Harnessing social networking could be a difficult task and might even cause some bad reputation. Social networking should be properly handled so that it could be useful for different purposes.

More than Simple Data

Effective social networking should never be limited in one account or website. Focusing on a single website may help in increasing focus since more time will be used to develop the account. But as the internet is constantly evolving, focusing on a single account is not feasible since a website could be easily overshadowed by another website. It is always important to keep up with the latest in online technology so that adoption would be fast and easy.

Account creation in different social networks is just the first step. As already indicated, an account can’t do anything good for the business. The account should reflect what the business stand for which is also the same for professionals. Customization is important so that the identity of the business could be easily preserved.

After customization, consistency is very important in social networking. A good way for businesses to keep in touch with each other is to constantly connect. It may be difficult to update everyone through email but social networking eases the said task. A business or a professional will only update their accounts and everyone will get the latest news.

Efficient Business in Social Networking

Businesses now realize the need for social networking. It is through this platform that they will be able to market their products and services without spending anything on their end. As they become members of a social network, they can recommend their services and products to potential customers.

The difficulty for businesses in social networking is on how they would push their products without being too intrusive to potential customers. Fortunately, social networking websites addresses that problem by creating an environment wherein everyone connects to everyone “as friends.” That means, your connection to customers will only be possible if your customers allow it.

But one of the most intriguing techniques nowadays in gaining popularity in social networks is through “viral marketing.” This is a form of marketing wherein you create a video, photo or even a blog that stirs interest or intrigue. An intriguing video or photo could spread like wildfire in social networks as it will be shared among friends.

Using viral marketing to increase your popularity online may require time and resources but, if they are smartly made, they can increase the popularity of the business.

Professional vs. Personal

When a business or a professional creates a social networking account, connection to other users becomes a possibility. Through this connection, businesses and professionals can choose to be personal or professional in the way they interact with users. While this setting is feasible for professional, businesses that overlap personal and professional use of social networking is not advised.

The reason why personal and business social networking should never be together is consistency. As a professional, you always have to provide an impression of professionalism. Your focus is on the industry and your updates with different clients and contacts are only interested on what you have to say regarding the business or the industry.

Placing your emotions on your professional social network profiles is not recommended. Although businesses want to know more about you, they are not necessarily interested about your emotions.

Keep your personal and professional social networking separate. You’ll be able to improve your business’ status in the industry while staying in touch with your friends and family.
