How to Avoid Anxiety at Work Place

By Exforsys | on July 11, 2009 |
Anxiety Management

Having a decent and good-paying job is a top priority in a person’s life because our job or career is an important element for survival. The workplace is an avenue for a working individual to develop maturity and professionalism. Challenge is a factor in the workplace. An employee will encounter issues and problems in the office. These challenges may be from the boss, personal challenge, or it could be from office colleagues. There are office issues that can be easily be dealt with, but there are also matters that can be challenging to battle.

Have you ever experienced being given a project which you think is too heavy a responsibility for you to handle? Or does your boss incessantly pressure you on the task assigned to you? When situations like these arise, an uncomfortable feeling starts to build up. You cram to get things done and work longer hours if necessary to complete the task. You know that is an obligation that should be carried out. And then you start to feel the pressure at work. This normally happens to employees in the workplace. The burden a person feels caused by stress at work is a big factor causing anxiety.

Everyone feels anxious when they know that pressure is sinking in every nerve of the body. There are ways and techniques to avoid anxiety when dealing with important matters at work. It may take a lot of effort from the individual but it will be worth it once these approaches are applied.

Build a Positive Mind

Considering the fact that important matters at work are “important”, there is no other way to deal with it but face the challenge. It is part of work, they say. But developing a positive approach to such challenge will make the process smoother. It starts with a complete paradigm shift which is a transition from negative thoughts to an optimistic outlook of the situation.Rather than thinking of heavy and important tasks as a burden to take, think of it as an opportunity for you to prove yourself in your performance.

Think that you are given such heavy assignment because your manager or supervisor trusts that you can deliver the work and capable of doing it more than the others. Think of the possible wonderful results to look forward to after the work is done—job promotion, salary increase, etc. Notice that building a positive mind will transform the way you feel toward your work and toward others.

Maintain Professionalism

When the boss delegates an important task to you, accepting the task is always accompanied by a feeling of fear and uncertainty of being able to carry it out or not. Do not fret because there is always a solution to all things if you just know how to deal with it. Nothing ever gets solved with constant whining and complaining. Be professional enough to deliver the task because your boss expects you to do it.A true mark of a professional is someone who does the work because the person has decided to do it, not forced to do it. It is normal to feel anxious but it is not a good thing to grumble at your desk and hate your superior for giving you such heavy responsibility.

Seek Help When Necessary

As the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one.” If you think that the project assigned to you is indeed challenging and difficult, do not hesitate to approach your co-workers for any help. Their ideas and opinions may be helpful. You can even brainstorm with them to make the most out of your task. There is always nothing wrong with seeking for assistance when it is about matters at work. Say, the project your supervisor gave you obviously needs more than one member for it to be completed, openly talk to your supervisor about it so that the task can be aptly delegated to the other employees. That way, your load is lesser and the work becomes faster.Applying these simple steps will definitely reduce the level of anxiety a working individual will feel when dealing with important matters. It does not just improve work productivity; it also creates a more harmonious working relationship among co-workers in the workplace.
