The Concept of Virtual Manager

Virtual Team Management

The Role of Virtual Manager

Virtual management is a field which is designed to make a distinction when it comes to the responsibilities a project manager has, which is often separate from the production site.Virtual management is a critical area for virtual teams, and the reason for this is because it allows the managers to focus on the needs of an economy which is service based. In such an economy the relationship between a product and a commodity may no longer provide a solid competitive advantage which can be sustained, and this can be due either to international competition or related issues.

The virtual manager pays more attention to the customers, as well as the value chain which is of importance to these clients. The biggest problem with this approach is that the relationship between products and commodities which can be outsourced to foreign jurisdictions may cause a great deal of harm.  However, proponents point out benefits as well, because the nations which are involved tend to become specialized, and this allows them to compete more effectively in the international arena.

The introduction of the Internet, combined with the lower cost of computers and global communications, has made virtual management highly valuable to organizations both large and small. As long as virtual organizations exist, there will be a demand for individuals who can manage them.

How Virtual Organizations are Structured

The typical virtual team will be comprised of individuals such as the stakeholders, as well as the employees, and these groups will be managed with either a long term strategy, or an ad hoc method which is designed to solve a specific problem within a short period of time. The people who work within these organizations are referred to as being "virtual workers," but this designation is largely dependent on where they are in time as well as space.

The good thing about virtual management is that it becomes a lot easier when it is used for work which is information intensive. The reason for this is because information itself has become a factor of production.Data which is raw, and which can be mined in such a way that allows it to be processed and then sold, can become raw material for other people. This is largely dependent on the accuracy, relevance, and importance of the information.  This phenomenon is becoming more important in a number of different industries, and some of these industries include consulting, PR, advertising, real estate, and security.

No matter how traditional a company may be at its core, it can still make use of both virtual teams and virtual management. At the same time, there are a number of characteristics that a company will need to meet in order to consider itself to be "virtual." Without these characteristics, there may be little need to make use of the services of a virtual manager. Understanding these characteristics can allow companies to make better decisions in structuring their organizations.

Virtual Organizational Characteristics

A virtual team will typically be one that is decentralized in a spatial way. It will have employees, customers, and even managers who may be dispersed over a wide region. Some of these organizations may be dispersed for only short periods of time, but when they are dispersed, this occurs within multiple time zones.Virtual teams are also heavily tied to technology, and it is the most cutting edge technology which has led to the advent of groups which are interconnected globally.

Virtual management gives employees the option of traveling to their place of work if they wish, or working from a remote locations. This provides the corporations with a very high level of efficiency. This also creates a high demand for communication through virtual technology. Someone needs to be responsible for overseeing both communications, projects, and deadlines, and this is the responsibility of the virtual manager.

The manager must be able to manage the affairs of a project from multiple locations. Unlike traditional managers, they will also need to be responsible for dealing with projects that may not necessarily be a part of their core organization. This is the essence of virtual management, and every virtual team needs it.
