What are the Best Self-Supervision Techniques?

By Exforsys | on December 3, 2010 |
Self Supervision

Good self-supervision skills can be applied to both personal and professional aspects of your life. Career individuals who are looking forward to become successful in their careers strive by self-supervising. This way, they prepare themselves for whatever the future will bring.

How can one develop the skill of self-supervising? How can you learn to completely manage or run your own life with independence and responsibility? There are techniques and approaches to attain self-supervision.

Proper Mind Conditioning

Some of the failures that people experience are results of excessive negative thinking or the lack of confidence and trust in themselves. There are people who are really good at something; they just do not realize their potentials. When you want to learn how to manage your own life and your own actions, you have to take the proper mindset. This simply means that you must believe in your mind and in your heart that you can be someone who can stand on your own feet.

One way to condition your mind is to put yourself in another person’s shoes, such as your boss. Think of how this person manages to perform management roles. Think of how your boss is able to supervise a group of employees with various personalities and work attitudes. Then, you should think that if your boss can do the job well, you can probably do the same.

Proper mind conditioning to something that you are about to undertake or wish to attain for yourself helps boost confidence and gets you started in whatever the endeavor is. So, if you wish to become good at self-supervising, think like one and eventually, you will be like one.

Make a Checklist of Your Skills

It is important to know what skills are necessary for self-supervision. An individual can acquire a wide range of skills, but in the case of self-supervising, maybe not all the skills are applicable and suitable. You must know how to identify which skills are needed for a certain aspect.

To become a self-supervised individual, the most basic and fundamental skills you need to have and to develop are time management, planning and organizational skills, and problem solving and decision making abilities. Make a checklist of these skills and find out what you still have to enhance. Remember that the focus of self-supervision is more on you and not so much on your ability to interact with other people, although interpersonal skills are important when you become a supervisor in the long run.

Make sure you are well-equipped with the right skills. If time management is an issue for you, start working on it in simple ways such as setting a specific time to wake up in the morning and getting to work, creating timelines even for minor tasks in the office, and allocating specific timeframes for other activities. If planning is not your forte, start developing the habit of making a daily routine of your activities.

  • Write down your to-do list every day.
  • Work on the important tasks first based on your to-do list and take care of the remaining tasks later.
  • If decision-making is your weakness, you must develop this skill, as this is very crucial to effectively self-supervise.
  • When faced with a situation wherein you need to come down to a decision, make an effort to decide on your own.
  • If you are apprehensive, you can always consult trusted people for advice but never let them make the decision. If you will be on your own, who else can decide for you?

Mirroring Technique

Some successful people take their inspiration from exemplary figures. Your parents are probably one of the most common examples of role models. The mirroring technique works that way. You choose a person whom you truly admire and look up to and then you try to imitate the ways of the person. That person can be your boss, your parent, or a successful figure.

Mirroring those people involves observing how they deal with life and the challenges of life and applying them in your actual day-to-day experiences at work or in whatever situation you are in. Eventually, you will learn to develop your own ways and style in managing yourself, and make use of approaches that you are comfortable doing.
